Zebra Mussel Sampler

This multi-plate sampler is ideal for collecting density and size distribution data on Zebra and Quagga Mussels (Dreissena spp.).
It is constructed with four Masonite plates that are 6, 8, 10 and 12” square, with the smallest plate on top. The plates are separated by 1” lengths of PVC pipe. Masonite is a good, economical substrate. Because it is disposable, it helps prevent cross-contamination among water bodies. Weights and tether lines can be attached.
The sampler is usually deployed so the top plate is at least 0.75m under the water surface. Water deeper than 1m is better. At the end of the sampling season, retrieve the sampler and carefully disassemble it in the lab, scraping the mussels from each side of the plate. Count and measure the individuals. Specimens can be preserved in 70% ethanol.

Kick Net

Use kick nets in stream beds. While one person holds the net, a helper upstream kicks the streambed with their foot and runs their fingers through the substrate to drive invertebrates into the net. Muslin shroud on the bottom allows viewing from above, with a polyester edge for extra wear.

One of the best quantitative samplers for benthic invertebrates. Designed for shallow flowing rivers of moderate current with fine, loose sediments, its main advantages are portability and ease of use. The filtering area is large enough to insert your entire hand in order to remove specimens. Mini Surber Stream Bottom Sampler

One of the best quantitative samplers for benthic invertebrates, now available in a smaller size. Normally used for macroinvertebrates (clams, worms, insect larvae…), but sometimes also larger specimens (crayfish, adult insects…). Also called a riffle sampler or run sampler, the Mini-Surber is designed for small streams and rivulets where our larger model will not fit, as well as for student use. Hess Stream Sampler

Similar to Surbers but suitable for gravel and cobble bottoms. Cylindrical with enclosed sides and an open top, it has two strong reversible handles for forcibly pushing and rotating the cylinder into stream bottoms. The sampler penetrates 3 - 6” (75 - 150 mm). Once in place, scrub the pebbles inside so the specimens are carried by the current into the net. Water flows in through the upstream window and out the downstream window into the collecting net and bucket.

Veliger Net

The Veliger Net is the suggested net for collecting Zebra and Quagga Mussels. This is a common net configuration often used by the USGS and other government agencies. This net is designed to collect veligers, the free-swimming larval form of Zebra and Quagga mussels (Dreissena spp.) As we all know, these fast-spreading invasive species has been taking over our lakes for a number of years. Because they reproduce so quickly and in such dense configurations, they are interfering with the food chain of our native species and can be easily and inadvertently transferred from lake to lake on boats, nets and clothing.
Keeping track of - and curtailing the spread of - veligers has just become easier with the Veliger Net. Our net is extra-long, with a 20-inch mouth opening and hefty, 1000mL collection bucket. The extensive volume of water sampled with this net is needed to calculate the veliger density using microscopic methods in the laboratory. And, because, like all nets, it is impeccably well-constructed, it can withstand the constant decontamination procedures involved with sampling these organisms.

Embeddedness Ring

These survey rings come in 2 sizes: 30 cm and 60 cm diameter. They are made of heavy gauge stainless steel. They each have two handles that make them easy to carry and set in place on the ground or in sediment. Use them for plant or soil surveys to mark off specific areas for subsampling. Randomly place the rings and only count the plants or evaluate the soil within the ring. They can also be used for stream embeddedness surveys.

Stream Drift NetsThese stationary nets, 39” in length with an 18" wide by a 12" tall frame, sample organisms from shallow flowing waters such as streams, rivers and tidal creeks. Hester Dendy Sampler

This inexpensive, compact and lightweight device has become a staple in the field and is similar in function to the periphyton. The most adaptable artificial substrate sampler on the market, it’s EPA recommended in 2 versions. Suspend it, float it or attach it to submerged objects such as boulders or stakes. Leave it in place for 2 or more weeks, then scrape the “critters” off the plates and analyze in the lab. Constructed of 1/8” (3 mm) thick tempered masonite for longer field life, with nylon spacers and SS hardware. We provide a wingnut at the bottom for easy disassembly.

Periphyton Sampler

Periphyton are microorganisms growing on submerged surfaces and are a good indication of comparative water quality. However, they can be difficult to collect due to the lack of natural substrates. We’re proud to state that this floating artificial substrate sampler specifically for the EPA. When placed at any depth in a stream, reservoir or lake and secured with a line and anchor (not included), algae grows on the glass slides. Remove the slides after 2 weeks and examine the algae, zebra mussels and other growth under a microscope for identification and counting.

Artificial Substrate Basket

Here's a low-cost, easy-to-use substitute for the Hester-Dendy that even fuctions in salt water. While it's a matter of taste, some investigators prefer the basket because only the natural substrate materials such as stones and twigs are used for colonization. This sampler is made of one inch square galvanized wire and measures 6-1/2" in diameter, 11" in length. The wire is coated with PVC to resist corrosion. One end is hinged and is tied with a nylon releasable tie. The other end is permanently fastened.
